A woman was killed and two people were injured in a shooting in downtown Oakland early Saturday morning, police said.
At about 1:30 a.m. a shooting was reported in the 1300 block of Broadway, near Frank Ogawa Plaza.
A witness told KTVU that a group of 30-40 had gathered near the intersection of 14th and Broadway after the end of First Friday activities that had been happening nearby. The shooter apparently came up on the crowd and fired randomly into it.
Three victims were transported to a hospital with gunshot wounds, police said.
A woman was pronounced deceased at the hospital. A man and a woman are in serious, but stable condition Saturday morning, according to police.
Because of the location of the shooting near a transit hub on Broadway, investigators are hoping surveillance video from AC Transit buses traveling through the area at the time might provide them answers about what happened.
Watchdogs are questioning an exclusive agreement between the City of Oakland and a non-profit group, tapped to lead a multi-million dollar project to redevelop the area around the Coliseum BART station.
