A Sacramento woman serving time in prison for abusing her 6-year-old step-daughter was given an additional life sentence after she pleaded no-contest to a murder charge filed after the girl died of her injuries.
The Sacramento Bee reports Sacramento Superior Court Judge Patrick Marlette handed down the additional 15-to-life prison term Wednesday to 43-year-old Weili Kao for the murder of Truly Lo.
Kao was convicted and sentenced in 2005 for felony child abuse. Prosecutors said during the trial that Kao became enraged in May 2004 when Truly disobeyed her, and beat the girl, hit her with a coat hanger, then strangled her. The girl remained in a vegetative state for more than six years.
Prosecutors filed murder charges against Kao after Lo's death in 2010.
