Woman tells Monterey Co. deputies 55YO boyfriend held gun to her head

An argument at a home in Greenfield Thursday turned violent when a man threatened to kill his girlfriend by allegedly holding a gun to her head, Monterey County sheriff's officials said.

Deputies responded to the home in the 47000 block of Arroyo Seco Road where the female victim had fled the scene after her boyfriend, identified as 55-year-old plumber Paul Renney of Greenfield, allegedly held a gun to her head, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies surrounded the home and Renney was eventually captured after trying to flee by climbing a fence. Several firearms were later recovered inside the suspect's home, sheriff's officials said.

According to the sheriff's office, the victim told authorities Renney -- her boyfriend of three years -- was intoxicated and held a loaded rifle to her head and said he was going to kill her. She said he disabled the phone so she could not call police.

The victim fled to a neighbor's home and called 911.

Sheriff's officials said Renney was on probation for a prior DUI, which prohibits him from consuming alcohol. He also had been issued a restraining order restricting him from possessing firearms, sheriff's officials said.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to the sheriff's office. Many hunting rifles were also seized as evidence.
