SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. —
A Southern California teenager was arrested early Tuesday after police interrupted a brazen attack of a foreign tourist near San Francisco’s famed Fisherman’s Wharf, authorities said.
San Francisco police said Christopher Dutel, an 18-year-old resident from Southern California, was in custody after his arrest around 4 a.m. in the at 400 Northpoint. He was booked into San Francisco County Jail on multiple sexual assault charges and false imprisonment
San Francisco police told KTVU they got a call of a missing juvenile at about 2:30 a.m. and immediately mounted extra patrols in the Fisherman’s Wharf area where several hotels catering to tourists are located.
At around 4 a.m., one of the patrolling officers saw Dutel attacking the girl in some bushes located in front of a union hall at 400 Northpointe.
The girl was rescued and the alleged attacker taken into custody, police said. Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment .
Authorities said the girl was part of a group of tourists from a foreign country, but did not disclose how she had become separated from the group.
Darrell Burton, who works nearby, told KTVU he was stunned that the attack came in an area as popular as the Wharf.
”I’m shocked,” he said. “They really patrol this area because we have people coming and going 24 hours. Generally it’s a safe neighborhood.”
There was no immediate word on the girl’s condition.
