PACHECO, Calif. —

Firefighters in Contra Costa County battled huge flames that destroyed a mobile home and threatened to spread to other units late Saturday morning.

Within minutes, flames engulfed a home in the Sun Valley Village mobile home park on Medina Drive in Pacheco.

Crews on scene told KTVU that the trailer’s space heater was possibly to blame.

No one was inside the mobile home at the time it caught fire, but Penny Kirby, a neighbor, said the woman who lived at the home with her son lost everything.

“She's been here maybe about 10 years,” Kirby said. “She's lost her husband, and now her home. I feel so, so sorry for her.”

Three engine companies with the Contra Costa Fire Protection District arrived on the scene and within minutes, kept the flames from spreading to other homes.

Neighbors raised concerns about the Contra Costa Fire Protection District's plans to close fire stations in the area.

They said a slower response Saturday could've allowed the flames to spread to other homes.

Firefighters acknowledge they'll soon have to do more with less.

The department plans to close four stations in January after voters said no to a new parcel tax designed to fill a $16 million dollar budget hole.

“A couple of the units that were there are potentially slated for closure and that is a concern that we're going to have to reduce the amount of resources that we send to structure fires,” said Contra Costa Fore Protection District Chief Dominic Ciotola.

The department has not yet announced which fire stations will be closing in January.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire, but they've ruled out arson.
