SAN FRANCISCO —
A fisherman is OK after his boat became stranded in a marsh when the tide started going out and he became stuck in mud when he tried to walk ashore, a U.S. Coast Guard official said Sunday.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew was called to an area near the mouth of the Petaluma River around 6 p.m. Saturday when the man became stuck and he used a hand-held radio to call for help, said Coast Guard Ensign Corrine Gaines.
"He figured he could hike out of there, but he didn't realize how far he had to go, "Gaines said.
When the helicopter arrived at the scene, a rescue swimmer from the helicopter helped the man climb into a rescue basket and he was hoisted up and into the helicopter, Gaines said.
The man — believed to be in his 60s — did not need medical attention. He was flown to Petaluma Airport to meet his daughter. His name has not been released.
The rescue came just a few hours after crews rescued two people who were thrown into the chilly waters of San Francisco Bay after their sailboat was hit by a tugboat pulling a barge near the Golden Gate Bridge around 3 p.m. Saturday, Gaines said.
The two people were taken to a Coast Guard station in Sausalito, where they were examined by paramedics and released.
Crewmembers of the tug and barge were ordered to return to port to be interviewed by Coast Guard investigators.
