MILIPITAS, Calif. —

A mother and her 3-year-old daughter were recovering from their injuries Tuesday after their car went off an embankment into a ravine near the Milpitas hills early that afternoon.

The Milpitas Fire Department dispatched crews to the crash scene around 12:44 p.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle over an embankment 2 miles east of Highway 880.

The mother was driving on Calaveras Road when her car went off the road and fell about six feet into a creek, said Milpitas police Sgt. Frank Morales.

The crews arrived at the scene, which was downhill from the Spring Valley Golf Course, to find the heavily-damaged car and the two injured still inside the vehicle about 12 feet from the road.

Responders removed the child, who was in a child seat, from the wreckage immediately and the mother a short time later.

Calaveras Road was briefly shut down as emergency crews freed mother and daughter from the car.

The two were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries; the daughter’s injuries were described as being only minor, while the 29-year-old mother’s injuries were moderate to major after the crash.

A passerby reported the accident to emergency responders, Morales said.

"You could clearly see the car from the street," Morales said.

The Milipitas Police Department was investigating the cause of the incident, which was unclear later that day.

Investigators said that at the time of the incident Calaveras Road was dry and clear. They also said that it appeared that the vehicle had rolled at least once before coming to a stop in the ravine.
