PETALUMA, Calif. —

It took firefighters mere minutes to extinguish a fire that gutted the garage of a Petaluma home Sunday evening, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

A resident of a home in the 1700 block of Tampico Court in Petaluma called authorities after reportedly seeing black smoke coming from a door connecting the home and garage and then finding the garage full of smoke and flames, fire officials said.

Crews arriving on the scene around 5:40 p.m. saw heavy fire coming from the garage of the two-story house.

Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in about 20 minutes, officials said.

All of the home's occupants exited safely and were uninjured.

The fire heavily damaged the garage, causing an estimated $150,000 to $200,000 in damage to the structure and its contents, according to fire officials.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Monday.
