OAKLAND, Calif. —

Thousands lost power in Oakland early Wednesday morning after a car crashed into a utility pole, according to PG&E.

The outage was first reported at about 1:50 a.m., PG&E spokesman J.D. Guidi said.

About 6,800 customers were originally impacted by the outage, Guidi said.

The outage was caused by a car that crashed into a power pole in the 4000 block of Edwards Ave., breaking the pole and bringing down power lines, Guidi said.

According to police, the car crashed into two other vehicles before slamming into the utility pole, which was off of I-580.

Edwards exit off I-580 was closed that morning while crews worked to repair the broken pole.

As of 4:30 a.m., crews had restored power to all but 24 customers, Guidi said.

Guidi said it was unknown when the remaining affected customers would have their power restored.

Meanwhile, police were continuing to search Wednesday morning for the driver of the offending car, who ran from the scene after the vehicle had collided with the utility pole.

Additional information about the crash was not immediately available.
