SAN JOSE, Calif. —
Firefighters controlled a four-alarm apartment fire in San Jose Sunday night that left five people with minor injuries and displaced five dozen residents, a San Jose Fire captain said.
Fire crews arrived around 9:10 p.m. Sunday at the Del Coronado Apartments at 5255 Camden Ave., said Fire Capt. Reggie Williams.
Five residents suffered minor injuries, ranging from smoke inhalation to chest pains and shortness of breath, Williams said. Two were sent to nearby hospitals while three were treated and released at the scene.
No firefighters were injured in the blaze.
The fire appeared to have started in an upstairs unit and spread through the building's attic, the fire captain said.
Firefighters were able to control the flames by 10:43 p.m., and fire crews remained on scene until about 12:30 a.m.
Williams said 20 homes were affected by the blaze, either because power was shut off in those units or by flames and smoke.
The American Red Cross was on hand to offer housing assistance for the displaced residents.
A total of 76 fire personnel, including crews from Santa Clara County Fire and the city of Santa Clara tackled the blaze, Williams said.
The fire captain said Sunday that he did not know if the apartment building's smoke alarms were working, and that the cause of the fire was under investigation.
