HALF MOON BAY, Calif. —

A surfer was hospitalized this weekend after being held under water by several waves at Mavericks on Sunday.

Actor Gerard Butler was filming scenes for the upcoming 2012 Curtis Hanson movie "Of Men and Mavericks" in the Half Moon Bay area and the San Jose Mercury News, among other media reports, claimed he was the rescued surfer.

Coastside Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Ari Delay said he could not divulge the name of the man rescued near the Pillar Point Harbor launch ramp Sunday at around 1 p.m.

Butler, 42, was taken to the beach where fire district medical personnel treated him at the scene after he had been held down by a couple waves, Delay said.

He was sent to Stanford Hospital as a precautionary measure, he said.
