SAN RAFAEL, Calif. —

Kids may love to play in the kind of large inflatable bounce houses that parents frequently rent for birthday parties, but a new report issued Monday says inflatables are causing more and more injuries.

According to researchers, every 46 minutes a youngster somewhere in the United States is hurt on an inflatable.

The study, published on Monday in the journal Pediatrics, reports inflatable bouncer injuries have skyrocketed, more than doubling the last two years.

While young people still love them, the parents KTVU spoke with expressed concerns about safety.

"They allow too many kids in at once, so they bounce off of each other," said Greenbrae mother Sandy Campo.

13-year-old Connor Lynch told KTVU he was hurt on an inflatable during his 9th birthday party.

"Now I really dont like them too much anymore," said Lynch.

"[He] face planted, knocked out a tooth," remembered his mother Kelly Lynch. "So I'm not surprised that's come out, theyre pretty dangerous."

Researchers said most common injuries result from falling while jumping, while others are caused by getting hurt while stepping in or out of bounce houses.

Astro Jump is the Bay Area's largest inflatable rental company. President Sloat Van Winkle said since 1986, he's actually seen fewer and fewer injuries.

"We put safety really as a priority in front of even fun when we choose the equipment that we're going to rent," said Van Winkle.

He said properly supervised inflatable bouncers are no more dangerous than traditional playground equipment and a lot more fun.

"If you rent from a reputable company, if you do watch your children while they're jumping and if you exercise a little bit of discipline, you'll have an injury free party," explained Van Winkle.
