KTVU Wins Peabody Award For BART Shooting Coverage

OAKLAND —

KTVU was awarded the prestigious Peabody Award Wednesday for its coverage of the 2009 fatal BART platform shooting of Oscar Grant III and events that have followed, according to officials at the Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Georgia.

The award honors broadcasters for on-air and online journalistic excellence.

Grant was killed as he was being detained by BART police on the platform at the BART Fruitvale Station in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day.

During his detention, former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle pulled out his service revolver and fatally shot Grant in the back. The incident was caught on cell phone video by passengers on a BART train.

KTVU aired those exclusive user-generated videos as part of its award-winning coverage.

Mehserle, 28, is awaiting trial in Los Angeles on murder charges.

The Peabodies are awarded annually for excellence in electronic media, which includes TV, radio and the Internet. They can go to programs, institutions or individuals. There are no program categories.

The awards will be presented at a luncheon at New York's Waldorf-Astoria in New York on May 17.
