CONTRA COSTA Co., Calif. —

Four fire stations in Contra Costa County will be closing at the end of this year after the failure of Measure Q and the department is warning residents the cuts won't stop there.

Measure Q was a $75 annual parcel tax set to fill a $16 million budget hole for the Contra Costa Fire Protection District, but it didn't pass and now fire officials said it's no longer a question of whether stations will be closed, rather which ones.

Neighbors of fire station 17 in Lafayette are worrying and wondering if it's on the chopping block.

Izabella Adolphson's parents live right across the street.

"I have three kids and knowing the fire station is across the street is amazing, it's a safe place," Adolphson said.

Fire Chief Daryl Louder was already meeting with county supervisors to talk about which of the department's 28 stations would have to close -- something he talked about in July.

"It's not a scare tactic, it's reality," Louder said.

Now the county fire marshal confirmed four stations will close in January, along with two more next July.

Whether the station down the street is closed, that station is going to busier somewhere else covering calls somewhere else throughout the fire district.

Fire officials said they've already made other cuts, but some residents who voted against the parcel tax aren't convinced.

"People are just fed up with the pensions," said Carol Martin, a Lafayette resident. "It's just way too much money and there doesn't seem to be any reform in sight, no one's doing anything and the rest of us just don't want to pay for that."

The fire marshal said each of these stations costs about $2 million a year to operate and they could have to close10 of them in the next couple of years.
