BERKELEY, Calif. —

Dozens of people marched in the streets of Berkeley Tuesday night, demanding answers from police after a transgender person died during an altercation with officers.

About 75 demonstrators, some wearing bandanas and masks, marched through downtown Berkeley to call attention to the death of a 41-year-old transgender person who died exactly one month before the protest while in the custody of Berkeley Police.

The victim's step mother has reportedly identified him as Xavier Moore, though others say the victim was a woman named Kayla Moore.

Either way, Moore was described as a 347 pound schizophrenic and drug user who had some kind of violent reaction when police responded to reports of a disturbance at his Allston Way apartment.

It was during the altercation that Moore died for reasons that were still unknown Tuesday.

“Details of the incident haven't been released by BPD so this is kind of an accountability thing,” said one protester Tuesday evening.

Berkeley Police said it can't release details of the case while it's under investigation.

“Obviously we understand the community's desire to want information regarding the investigation. It is ongoing -- our detectives are still working on the case,” said Berkeley Police spokesperson Jennifer Coats.

That has not assuaged protesters, who angrily confronted police in riot gear outside BPD headquarters at about 8 p.m.

Protesters are also angry at news media and at one point rushed a KTVU camera operator.

One protester who was asked why he was there answered, “Because I hate the f--- police and I hate you.”

Metal barricades were set up at Berkeley Police Headquarters to keep people away from the building after the confrontation with protestors, but by 10 p.m. the crowd had dispersed and the area was quiet.
