LOS GATOS, Calif. —
The Los Gatos Town Council grew heated Monday night when the topic at hand was a new store that sells guns.
Rarely does a Los Gatos Town Council meeting spill out into the lobby, but on Monday it did, requiring an overflow room for the crowd.
The discussion centered on Templar Sports and Gun Sales, which officially opened its doors on December 29th on University Avenue. Since then, several people realized there was no town ordinance or public meeting about a store in Los Gatos that sells handguns and rifles.
The gun sales sparked outrage from some local residents. At the meeting, many held signs demanding accountability and transparency.
"This is not about access about access to guns. There are plenty of places to purchase a weapon," said Los Gatos resident Patricia Earnstrom. "The question is why do we have to be one of those places?"
But as the outrage about Templar Sports grew, so did the support for the store. Many people attending the meeting held up "We support Templar Sports" signs.
"Fact: the only thing that stops a crazy man with a gun is a good guy with a gun. And fact: the good guys can't get guns if they don't have stores like Templar to go to," said Mark S. Tober of the Golden State 2nd Amendment Council.
In the end, the council could make no final decision, guaranteeing the gun debate will go on.
But the council asked the town staff to come back to a future meeting with possible new requirements for gun sales, including a police permit process, requiring ID checks for ammunition sales and a temporary moratorium on gun sales.
The attorney for Templar Sports told KTVU the meeting made it clear the store is safe to operate in Los Gatos and any potential ordinance or moratorium on future gun stores will not effect it.
