SAN FRANCISCO —
Michelle Shocked, a folk singer who caused a “Twitter-storm” of controversy earlier this week after going on an anti-gay rant during a concert in San Francisco, publicly apologized for her remarks Wednesday.
A Grammy-nominated singer whose career started in the 1980s, Shocked was documented making anti-homosexual comments while discussing California’s Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage, during her second set Sunday night at Yoshi’s in San Francisco.
"We are nearly at the end of time,” said Shocked, whose remarks were recorded and posted online recently. “Once preachers are held at gunpoint and forced to marry the homosexuals, I am pretty sure that that will be the signal for Jesus to come back down."
Later, she asked the crowd to “to tweet out that Michelle Shocked just said from stage, ‘God hates f*gg*ts.'”

The comments prompted the club to shut down the show, it also resulted in the venue’s owners stating that Shocked would never be invited back to Yoshi's.
"We at Yoshi's SF do not and will not ever tolerate the type of bigotry and hatred exhibited last night," a representative from the venue wrote on Twitter Modnay afternoon. "She will never be back."
As word of her remarks spread across the Internet, several promoters around the country canceled her shows – at least 13 venues, including all of her dates scheduled for June, according to the blog Little Australia – which were part of a tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of her breakthrough album, “Short, Sharp, Shocked.”
The story also garnered a lot of criticism to be directed at her on Twitter. One Twitter user wrote, "You just committed career suicide. If you believe that nonsense you deserve the ignominy ur gonna get."
In a written statement released Wednesday, two days after the story spread across the Web during which she remained silent, Shocked apologized to her fans, attributing the fallout to her failure at properly expressing her feelings
“I do not, nor have I ever, said or believed that God hates homosexuals (or anyone else). I said that some of His followers believe that,” she wrote.
Later, “But don't believe everything you read on Facebook or Twitter. My view of homosexuality has changed not one iota. I judge not. And my statement equating repeal of Prop 8 with the coming of the End Times was neither literal nor ironic: it was a description of how some folks - not me - feel about gay marriage.”
Shocked's statement did little to assuage angered fans on social media -- one person wrote on Twitter, "Sorry Michelle Shocked but some vague PR letter doesn't get you off the hook. It's over. You're done."
There were no updates by Wednesday evening on whether her canceled show dates would be rescheduled.
Below is the entirety of Shocked's statement:
AN OPEN LETTER FROM MICHELLE SHOCKED
I do not, nor have I ever, said or believed that God hates homosexuals (or anyone else). I said that some of His followers believe that. I believe intolerance comes from fear, and these folks are genuinely scared. When I said "Twitter that Michelle Shocked says "God hates faggots," I was predicting the absurd way my description of, my apology for, the intolerant would no doubt be misinterpreted. The show was all music, and the audience tweets said they enjoyed it. The commentary came about ten minutes later, in the encore.
And to those fans who are disappointed by what they've heard or think I said, I'm very sorry: I don't always express myself as clearly as I should. But don't believe everything you read on facebook or twitter. My view of homosexualty has changed not one iota. I judge not. And my statement equating repeal of Prop 8 with the coming of the End Times was neither literal nor ironic: it was a description of how some folks - not me - feel about gay marriage.
The show, and the rant, was spontaneous. As for those applauding my so-called stance that "God Hates Faggots," I say they should be met with mercy, not hate. And I hope that what remains of my audience will meet that intolerance with understanding, even of those who might hate them.
Folks wonder about my sexuality, but denying being gay is like saying I never beat my husband. My sexuality is not at issue. What is being questioned is my support for the LGBT community, and that has never wavered. Music and activism have always been part of my work and my journey, which I hope and intend to continue. I'd like to say this was a publicity stunt, but I'm really not that clever, and I'm definitely not that cynical.
But I am damn sorry. If I could repeat the evening, I would make a clearer distinction between a set of beliefs I abhor, and my human sympathy for the folks who hold them. I say this not because I want to look better. I have no wish to hide my faults, and - clearly - I couldn't if I tried.
With love,
Michelle
