Alameda soldier dies in Afghanistan

ALAMEDA, Calif. —

A soldier from Alameda was killed while serving with the U.S. Army in Afghanistan on Sunday, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday.

Staff Sgt. Thomas K. Fogarty, 30, died in Ahmad-Khyel, Afghanistan from injuries he received when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, according to the defense department.

Fogarty was assigned to the 3rd Battalion (Airborne), 509th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
