SANTA CLARA, Calif. —

One Bay Area company is hoping to reach millions this Super Bowl Sunday with its latest TV ad.

KTVU caught a private screening of the entire commercial Friday, but could only mention a portion of it.

The star of the locally produced Super Bowl spot is baby Charlie, seen who is seen wheeling around in his walker.

The company behind the spot is San Mateo-based GoPro, which makes specially mounted high-definition video cameras.

CEO Nick Woodman picked the spot from more than 15 options.

"It was really Nick who saw the baby commercial and I think his eyes lit up and he said, 'That's genius,'" said Bradford Schmidt, GoPro creative director of media production.

GoPro joined 26 companies out of 35 advertisers who have already released their big game commercials, some spending up to $4 million for the spot.

According to YouTube, early released ads last year were viewed 600 more times online than those released during the game.

"So you want to get the biggest bang for your dollar. These early released (ads) give you a huge opportunity to do that," said Chuck Byers, a Santa Clara University professor in the Communications Department.

The GoPro commercial will air in 15 cities, including New York and San Francisco.

The idea for the commercial came from video that a Wisconsin father posted of his 8-month-old son.

The family-focused angle is a departure for the company known for adrenaline-filled videos of extreme athletes.

"The early release is new," Schmdit said. "We think this is going to be a standout."

Viewers can expect to see a lot of models, animals and babies in this year's ad with women being a key target audience.

According to YouTube, the most viewed ads on its site from this year’s Super Bowl were watched more than 35 million times.

The most shared ad on YouTube is Volkswagen's, "Get in get happy" spot.

YouTube also said, this year it's seen more advertisers release super bowl teaser videos before the game to help build online buzz.
