DALY CITY, Calif. —

A missing 11-year old was reunited with his family Monday night in what turned out to be an unnerving case of miscommunication for the boy's parents in Daly City.

It turned out sixth grader Hontzuo Ren didn't even know he was missing.

Daly City police said this was a case where they used every resource available to find Ren. He was last seen near Pollicita Middle School Friday afternoon.

KTVU went to the Ren's home in Daly City shortly after 6 p.m. to speak with his family.

Police said the sixth grader was reported missing by his father Sunday night after he learned his son wasn't at the home of a friend he was supposed to visit.

While KTVU was speaking with the family, police called KTVU to inform the station that the boy had been found and that they were trying to locate the father.

KTVU told police that a camera crew was with the family and, at the authorities' request, passed on the information that the boy was safe to his parents.

His father handed the phone to his stepson when detectives called because he doesn't speak English.

In Mandarin, the father thanked police. Ren's stepbrother Will Li said he was relieved too.

"I'm very happy right now," said Li.

KTVU caught up with father and son after they were reunited at the police station.

When asked how he was doing, Hontzuo Ren said he was "good" and that he had been at a friend's house.

Ren added that he went to a different friend's home than the one he had originally planned and that he didn't want to call his father because he was afraid he wouldn't be allowed to stay.

Ren also said he didn't know police were looking for him.

"I was surprised," said the boy. He told his father he was sorry.

Ren's father said he's very grateful he got his son back and thanked everyone for helping find him.

The 6th grader promised to never to do this again.

Police said school officials provided contact information for Ren's friends to help them track down the boy.
