DIABLO —

A couple was awakened by an apartment filled with smoke early Wednesday, escaping to safety as an one-alarm fire roared through their home, fire officials said.

San Ramon Valley Fire Chief Jack Barton said his agency received a call at about 4:44 a.m. reporting the fire in a caretaker’s apartment on the property of a luxury home located in the 1600 block of Alameda Diablo inside the Diablo Country Club.

Arriving firefighters were greeted by flames soaring from the second story window of the apartment located above a three-car garage.

“We woke up smelling smoke,” said the caretaker who identified himself as Winthrop. “My wife went to check it out and saw the fire in the back...We were able to get out quickly.”

Barton told KTVU that the fire did not look to be suspicious and fire crews were able to bring in until control in an hour.

There was no estimate for an amount of damage done to the structure.

It was the second time this week news crews have been to the quiet neighborhood of luxury homes located within the exclusive Diablo Country Club.

On Monday, fire crews responded around 1:25 p.m. to reports that a large oak tree had come crashing down onto a single-family home in the 1900 block of Alameda Diablo, off of Diablo Road, fire district spokeswoman Kimberly French said.

The three people inside the home at the time were able to get out safely, and no injuries were reported.

Officials deemed the house uninhabitable because of the damage.
