DALY CITY, Calif. —

Residents of a Daly City neighborhood inundated by mud during an early morning water main break faced new concerns Tuesday night about approaching rains.

A huge muddy mess greeted people that live along Lausanne Avenue Tuesday morning after the broken water main collapsed a hillside and unleashed a torrent of mud.

Crews that worked until well after dark planned to return to the neighborhood at first light Wednesday to continue cleaning up the mud at Hillside Park and prepare for the heavy rain expected later this week.

At nightfall, crews were still spraying off what mud was left on sidewalks, roadways and vehicles after a day long clean up effort.

The sight was welcomed by neighbors. Some told KTVU the mud-soaked streets kept them from going to work.

"[I] couldn't drive out in the car, Couldn't really walk out," said area resident Anne Esteves. "I think they said it was like three feet deep."

Another neighbor tried unsuccessfully to drive through the mess, resulting in a wheel well caked in mud with a note which read "Will be picked up by insurance company."

"I told them not the run the engine because I was afraid the mud got into the catalytic converter," the neighbor said.

Some residents said they were worried that the hillside is now compromised and rain later this week could cause more problems.

"It was pretty scary. I guess we're going to have rain coming soon," said Estevez. "You just never know if it could happen again now that there's one spot that's come down already."

Daly City's Director Water and Wastewater Resources Patrick Sweetland told KTVU engineers have determined the hillside is stable.

Still the city plans to take precautions including clearing debris from storm drains.

"We'll be looking at the drains we have to make sure they're directed the right way so it goes into where the drains are," said Sweetland.

One homeowner gave the city high marks for the cleanup.

"They're moving really fast," said the man who declined to give his name. "They had trucks and everything here all day long."

Daly City officials said residents who suffered damage to property should file a claim in person with the City Clerks office.

Damage to vehicles may be covered by auto insurance policies.

Sweetland told KTVU the ruptured water main was 78 years old and that the pipe's age was the likely cause of the break.
