DALY CITY, Calif. —

A Daly City school program set to offer free protection to teens who are sexually active is asking for donations.

One school district in Daly City is seeking donations so students can get free condoms.

Many students at Westmoor High School in Daly City will soon be able to get free condoms, along with the four other high schools in the Jefferson Union High School District.

The condom availability program is aimed at preventing teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted disease and it could be up and running next month.

"There's AIDS out there as well and if this can protect the student from disease or death, the board recognizes this," said Thomas Minshew, the district superintendent.

The district consists of approximately 4,000 students in five high schools in Daly City, Brisbane and Pacifica.

Similar programs exist in San Francisco and Contra Costa County.

Some students say it's an excellent idea.

Others say they don't like the idea at all.

"People are going to have more sex and when you are young you are not supposed to have sex," said student Chastity Pagdlia.

The schools say they won't be simply handing out condoms. Students must first take a health education class and speak with a counselor at the school.

A Daly City Youth Health Clinic has reportedly seen an uptick recently in chlamydia, preventable with protection.

Some parents who spoke with KTVU opposed the idea.

"You give them condoms you are telling people it's OK to do that," said Mike Penas, a parent.

Some might say this is promoting teenage sex.

"Not at all," Minshew said. "The board doesn't see it that way. It's protection. It's to help the students."

District officials are adamant that no school money will be going toward buying condoms. The program will run on donations and the schools will need some 30,000 condoms for the next school year.
