About 100 people turned out Sunday night for a vigil to remember a 10-year-old girl who lost her life in a tragic apartment fire this weekend.

Five family members made it out of their burning apartment, but Corlina Godfrey did not. A memorial grows outside the apartment as does the community support.

"I miss Corlina, that was my baby, and all I can think about was I heard her cry," said the victim's mother Helen Zigler.

Her daughter's cries will haunt, not only her family, but many in the crowd of neighbors who ran to the apartment Saturday morning and tried to save the trapped child, but couldn't.

"I thought I got all the kids out, I didn't know she was the only one still up there," Zigler said. "And now as a parent, I feel bad I wasn't able to go get her because they wouldn't let me back in."

Firefighters tried to rescue Corlina but they fell through the second floor as it collapsed, and had to retreat.

Teachers who came to the vigil said Corlina loved to read and write stories. She studied hard and won academic awards.

"Her smile was bright and when you would see her, she was soft spoken, but that smile said everything, and had a heart of gold," said Lisa Allay, Corlina's teacher. "I have a picture of her curled up with her blanket and pillow, reading, with a huge smile on her face."

Community leaders reminded Treasure Island families to embrace every day, and embrace Corlina's family.

"We want to make sure we're not just good neighbors to them when they return, but great neighbors and show our support to them," said Miriam Saez, director of operations for Treasure Island.

Corlina's father, who also escaped the fire, couldn't bear coming back to the apartment Sunday, but her siblings and mother returned.

"She was trapped, she couldn't get out," Zigler said. "She needed help and now I need help. I need help to get her buried."

Corlina has 10 surviving siblings and the financial stress on the family will make funeral expenses difficult, so a fund will be set up in the coming days.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
