SAN JOSE, Calif. —
The driver of a mini-van seen driving erratically in the parking lot of the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center was injured when he slammed his vehicle into the hospital‘s front lobby, officials said.
Jackie Lowther, the director of critical care at the hospital, told KTVU she was shocked when she saw the extent of the damage.
“It was quite frightening to see a mini-van sitting in the lobby,” she said.
According to Lowther, the driver of the vehicle was witnessed driving erratically in the parking lot just prior to the crash.
“The police told me he was driving erratically as he left the emergency department and the parking lot,” she said. “He drove between two posts directly into the plate glass window in the lobby.”
Authorities said they got a call at about 3:49 a.m. reporting the crash. Fortunately, at that hour there was no one in the lobby.
Lowther said a housekeeper also was cut by debris and glass from the crash.
Both the driver and the housekeeper were being treated at the hospital. Lowther said the driver was in stable condition.
