RICHMOND, Calif. —

Motorists heading west onto the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge may face some delays Friday night and in the coming weeks as crews install a new automated toll-taking system.

The far left lane of the westbound Interstate Highway 580 approach to the bridge will be closed while work is conducted on tolls on the left side of the toll plaza, Caltrans and Bay Area Toll Authority officials said.

The lane closures and toll plaza work are set to continue through 5 a.m. Monday.

Beginning Feb. 15, one toll lane will be closed for the weekend to accommodate work on the toll plaza but all three lanes on the westbound approach to the bridge will remain open, transportation officials said.

Weekday closures on the toll plaza are slated to begin on Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. and end before the morning commute on Feb. 21, with additional closures planned throughout the week.

Transportation officials say the weekday closures could create delays of up to 15 minutes during peak commute hours.

Similar work to upgrade toll collection systems is scheduled for the Carquinez, San Mateo-Hayward, Dumbarton and Bay bridges throughout the year.
