Several homes were evacuated and power went out in an Antioch neighborhood near Sutter Delta Medical Center Thursday afternoon after a garbage truck hit a utility pole and caught fire, police said.
A garbage truck driver was in the process of lowering the truck's front dump bin near the intersection of Flagstone and Boulder drives just before 1 p.m. when the bin struck a power pole, according to police.
After coming into contact with the dump bin, the energized utility lines caused the truck and its contents to catch fire.
Fire crews arrived on the scene to extinguish the blaze and PG&E crews responded to cut power to the area.
Police said about 40 houses in the area lost power due to the incident and several were evacuated.
Power is expected to be restored to the homes by 7 p.m.
No injuries were reported and no buildings were damaged in connection with the fire, police said.
