Work continued early Monday on a gas main ruptured by construction workers in San Bruno that had halted traffic on a nearby Caltrain line for several hours overnight.
PG&E spokesman Jason King said the leak was capped at around 1:07 a.m. and that workers would continue repairing the line until around 1 p.m.
King said a PG&E advisor was at the job site at the time the back hole ripped into the gas line.
“An investigation is underway,” he said. “We were able to respond to it immediately.”
Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said the incident took place at a worksite on San Bruno Ave. where the roadbed was being lowered to separate the Caltrain tracks from the roadway.
“This is an area where there are a lot of pipes and lines under the roadway,” she said. “This is a very complicated project.”
Late night Caltrain riders were forced to use a bus bridge around the rupture as trains were halted on a nearby track until the leak was capped.
“We expect to operate on a normal schedule this morning,” she said.
The smell of mercaptan – an additive to natural gas to give it a detectable odor – hovered in the neighborhood early Monday, but King said there was no danger to local residents.
“It’s lingering because of the current (still weather) conditions,” he said of the mercaptan. “It will dissipate.”
King also said there were no evacuations ordered at the time of the rupture of the 2-inch line because it did not present a danger to nearby residents.
But the location of the leak led to some anxious moments for local residents. Sunday's leak was over 4 miles away from where a gas main exploded in a residential area of San Bruno back in 2010, killing 8 people and destroying 38 homes.
Watchdogs are questioning an exclusive agreement between the City of Oakland and a non-profit group, tapped to lead a multi-million dollar project to redevelop the area around the Coliseum BART station.
