BIG SUR, Calif. —

State Highway 1 in Big Sur will be closed Tuesday because of a major rockslide on Sunday.

Caltrans officials said an emergency contractor will clear the large debris field and repair a 60-foot section of the roadway on Highway 1 at Partington Ridge Road.

The highway is shut down just south of Mile Marker 42, near Deetjen's Big Sur Inn, and Mile Marker 23, at the community of Lucia.

It is unknown when the debris will be cleared, but one lane is expected to reopen by the end of the week, Caltrans officials said.

All businesses will remain open during the roadwork.

Alternate routes include Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, U.S. Highway 101 and state routes 68 and 46.
