State Highway 1 will reopen to unrestricted two-way traffic Friday evening just south of Big Sur after a nearly week-long closure caused by a rock slide, according to Caltrans officials.

The highway has been closed since Sunday afternoon.

An emergency contractor was called in following the landslide to clear the large debris field, repair a 60-foot section of roadway and stabilize the slide area above Highway 1 at Partington Ridge Road, Caltrans officials said.

The highway was shut down just south of Mile Marker 42, near Deetjen's Big Sur Inn, and Mile Marker 23, at the community of Lucia.

The road will reopen to unrestricted traffic at 5 p.m. Friday, but drivers are advised to use caution in the area because of rough pavement and loose gravel.

Starting at 7 a.m. Monday, one-way traffic controls will be in effect while repairs and cleanup continue in the area and drivers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes.

Daytime work and the traffic controls will continue into January until repairs are complete.

All businesses in northern Big Sur and south to Cambria remain open. Alternate routes include Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, U.S. Highway 101 and state routes 68 and 46.
