PLEASANT HILL, Calif. —

A homeless man was airlifted to a hospital after he was found lying on a Pleasant Hill roadway Monday morning with burns over most of his body, a police spokesman said.

A person driving near Morello Avenue and Taylor Boulevard saw a person lying in the street around 9:30 a.m. and called police, Sgt. Tim Frank said.

When officers arrived, they discovered that the 56-year-old man had suffered burns to his legs, arms and torso.

He was taken to a hospital by air ambulance, Frank said.

The man told investigators he had lit a candle to stay warm inside of his tent when it caught fire. Police found the tent site and determined that no one else had been injured, Frank said.

According to the National Weather Service, the overnight low in Pleasant Hill was 28 degrees.
