SAN JOSE, Calif. —

An engine fire shortly after take-off Tuesday morning forced a Horizon/Alaska Air DeHavilland DH8 to make an emergency landing at Mineta San Jose International Airport, airline officials said.

Alaska Airlines spokesperson Bobbie Egan said ground crews discovered evidence of a fire in the right engine.

FAA Public Affairs Manager Ian Gregor said the flight had left for San Jose for Boise at 11:09 a.m. and immediately ran into trouble.

The twin engine turboprop looped over the East Bay hills and returned to the airport.

Gregor said the crew reported a fire indication light had come on showing a problem with the right engine. Emergency crews were scrambled at the airport, but the plane was able to make a safe landing and rolled to a stop on one of the facility’s runways at 11:30 a.m.

The 48 passengers and six crew members on board were able to safely exit the plane. No injuries were reported.

Maintenance and fire crews were inspecting the plane that has forced the closure of one of Mineta’s runways.
