RICHMOND, Calif. —
Police arrested a second suspect Wednesday afternoon who was connected to the killing of a high school football player in Richmond on Sunday night, a police lieutenant said.
Matthew John Capanis, turned himself in to a probation office in Martinez around 1 p.m. today, Lt. Bisa French said.
The 27-year-old was wanted for murder in connection with the killing of 16-year-old Ulises Grijalva in Richmond late Sunday night.
"He knew we were looking for him," French said.
His arrest comes a day after police named Capanis as the second suspect in the murder.
Officers located the first suspect in the killing, Antioch resident Jacob Stephens, 29, as he fled the scene Sunday night, police said.
Stephens was arrested on a parole violation and murder charges were pending, French said.
Police said Capanis has a history of arrests for weapons and violent crimes in Contra Costa County. He was convicted of domestic violence charges and released in 2011 to a residence in Lafayette as part of a state post-release community service program.
Police believe both suspects may have shot Ulises, who was found at 121 W. MacDonald Ave. in Richmond around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, French said.
The 6-foot, 278-pound teen was an offensive lineman at Kennedy High School, where he was set to begin his junior year.
The first day of football practice, originally scheduled for Monday, was replaced by a team meeting held by head coach Mack Carminer to discuss what happened to Ulises.
Grief counselors have been made available for Kennedy High students, faculty and staff.
