SAN JOSE, Calif. —

San Jose city officials today launched what they're calling "wickedly fast" Wif-Fi for downtown users.

They claim it will not only speed up online surfing, but parking too.

"I feel the need for speed and we have it," declared San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed.

The speed limit on city streets is the same but the information super-highway just got a lot faster.

City leaders chainsawed through a wooden ethernet cable as a symbolic act welcoming downtown San Jose's wickedly fast and free Wi-Fi.

They say it is the fastest municipal Wi-F i in the nation.

"Typically we see municipal a thousand or two-thousand miles per hour in layman's terms," said Vijay Sammeta, San Jose's Chief Information Officer.  "We're upping that ante up to 10,000 miles per hour."

The coverage is mainly in the core downtown area.

The city said it cost $94,000 to install the equipment, seen on light posts at major intersections with more to come.

It will also be used to speed up "park and pay" kiosks near the HP Pavillion.

But not everyone is a believer.

"Wickedly fast, I don't know," said Muhammad Amer of Los Angeles.

Amer travels to downtown San Jose frequently for business while working in the computer world and was unimpressed with San Jose's old Wi-Fi capabilities.

Obviously a test was needed.

"Let's see how fast it works," Amer said. "Pretty good. Faster than the one I have at the hotel.  So, yeah, it's good.  I'm impressed."
