EL SOBRANTE, Calif. —

San Pablo Dam Road has reopened after being closed between El Sobrante and Orinda because of a two-car crash that killed a woman and her dog Wednesday afternoon.

The woman, a Richmond resident, was driving a Volkswagen Passat south on San Pablo Dam Road in the area of Old San Pablo Dam Road shortly after noon when a man driving north in a Chevrolet SUV drifted into oncoming traffic and struck the Passat head-on, CHP Officer John Fransen said.

The woman and her dog were pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, a man in his late 20s from El Sobrante, was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with a broken arm, broken wrist and contusions to his head, Fransen said.

The crash shut down the roadway in both directions. The road reopened around 3 p.m.

Fransen said the cause of the crash is under investigation.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, he said.
