Officials say a woman is hospitalized after she tumbled down a side of a cliff while trying to rescue her dog.

A National Park Service spokeswoman says rescue crews were called out to Fort Funston — a seaside park in San Francisco — around 3:50 p.m. Wednesday after the dog went over the side of the cliff and the woman fell about 50 feet as she tried to retrieve her pet.

Spokeswoman Alexandra Picavet says when paramedics and a park ranger reached the woman they called for a California Highway Patrol helicopter to take her to a hospital.

Officials did not provide details of the nature of the woman's injuries. Her name has not been released.

As for the dog, Picavet says it was taken off the side of the cliff by a park ranger using a harness that's designed to rescue scared dogs.

The animal was not hurt.
