SAN JOSE, Calif. —

The search for a reported gunman on the San Jose City College campus came up empty Tuesday evening after the entire school was put on lockdown, police said.

The campus was placed on locked down at 4:30 p.m. San Jose City College police and San Jose police conducted a campus wide sweep, going room to room, looking for a gunman.

Some classrooms were given the all clear at around 6:30 p.m., and the campus was placed on partial lockdown and students began leaving campus.

Police said the initial call was from one person, who did not identify themselves. The call indicated a person with a handgun may have been near the technology and science building, where police ended up concentrating their efforts.

The all clear at the technology building was given shortly before 8 p.m.

Fewer students than normal were on campus because of finals. There were no reports of shots fired or injuries.

Students Jannet Lara, 22, and Nathaniel Guevara, 20, were in class when the lockdown went into effect.

"We just locked the doors, turned out the lights and got under the tables," Lara said. "I didn't know what to think. I just wanted to go home."

The technology building was scheduled to host a number of final exams and graduation ceremonies

The scene of police officers and SWAT teams swarming the building was what most of the students told KTVU they will remember about this strange night.

A group of emergency medical technician students who had just graduated from the program were some of the last people to get out after police conducted its search of the five-story building.

"We were all a little frightened. We all kind of pulled out our cell phones to see what was going on, said student Vanessa Vazquez. We stayed calm, We hung out in the dark locked room for a few hours,"

"The room was locked. We put the table right in front of the door, said EMT student Kevin Dang. The room was locked and the lights were off. And we just sat there, waiting for law enforcement to come in."

For many students, the sound of officers going down the hallways was unnerving since no one could see what was actually happening.

"We were all just trying to stay as calm as possible and not be overly nervous or anything, said student Jordan Meyer. Just kind of waiting to hear things."

In another part of the building, a journalism class waited as the SWAT team conducted their search.

"It took a while. They were clearing [the building] methodically, floor by floor, said instructor Scott Miller. It took a while to get to us, because we were on the fifth floor. We did eventually get out safely."

Classes for Wednesday on the San Jose City College campus were set to be held as scheduled.
