A pedestrian who ran out of gas on U.S. Highway 101 Tuesday morning was hit by a car as he attempted to cross the highway to get back to his vehicle after picking up fuel from a nearby service station, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The pedestrian was hit shortly after 8:30 a.m. in the highway's northbound lanes near Todd Road at 8:34 a.m., according to the CHP.
The driver had pulled over on the center median when he ran out of gas, CHP Officer Post said.
He made it across the freeway to a nearby Rotten Robbie gas station at 55 E. Todd Road, where he purchased gas.
While crossing back to his vehicle, he was struck by at least one vehicle.
He was taken to a hospital with major injuries, Post said.
Watchdogs are questioning an exclusive agreement between the City of Oakland and a non-profit group, tapped to lead a multi-million dollar project to redevelop the area around the Coliseum BART station.
