Two teenagers killed in a crash late Saturday night have been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office as 19-year-old Fabian Perez and 16-year-old Salvador Fernandez.
Perez and Fernandez, both of San Jose, were driving with three other males in a 1999 Ford Contour when the car apparently crashed into a tree in the center divider of Chynoweth Avenue near Derek Drive at 11:55 p.m. Saturday, police Sgt. Jason Dwyer said.
Perez was pronounced dead at the scene. Fernandez was taken to a hospital, but succumbed to his injures around 2 a.m., police said.
All three other passengers were expected to survive.
It appears the car was moving west on Chynoweth Avenue at a high rate of speed when it struck the tree. No other cars appear to have been involved, police said.
As of Monday, it had not been determined if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, which was still under investigation by San Jose police.
Watchdogs are questioning an exclusive agreement between the City of Oakland and a non-profit group, tapped to lead a multi-million dollar project to redevelop the area around the Coliseum BART station.
