Brentwood fire spreads to 200-acres, threatens homes
OAKLEY, Calif. —
Fire crews are tackling a roughly 200-acre brush fire in Brentwood Monday afternoon, fire officials said.
The blaze, which started near Concord Avenue and John Muir Parkway, was reported around 3:40 p.m., Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said.
An East Contra Costa County Fire Protection District dispatcher said the flames spread quickly and are endangering some structures.
Berlant said a "significant number of homes" and the nearby Deer Ridge Golf Club are threatened.
He said the fire had not been contained as of 4:45 p.m.
Tankers and helicopters -- several of which were diverted from a separate brush fire near Concord earlier Monday afternoon -- were flying overhead dropping fire retardant and water on the flames, Berlant said.
Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews are also responding to the blaze.
Watchdogs are questioning an exclusive agreement between the City of Oakland and a non-profit group, tapped to lead a multi-million dollar project to redevelop the area around the Coliseum BART station.
