MARTINEZ, Calif. —
More than 300 people packed into Creek Side Church in Martinez Wednesday night at a vigil that gathered supporters united in their hope for the safe return of a tormented young man.
Ryan Menjivar is just three months from graduating from Alhambra High School. Family and friends told KTVU bullying may have led to his recent disappearance. They're hoping flyers and outreach will help bring him home.
Before he disappeared, Ryan left a note for his parents.
"He said that he was being bullied and that he was pretty much done with everything," said his mother Rossana Menjivar.
Friend Nick Jessup told KTVU he was Ryan's protector at school until Jessup went off to college last year. On Wednesday, he appealed to his friend.
"Ryan please come home," said Jessup. "All these people are here for you."
Jessup said Ryan spoke of his troubles and noted Ryan had come out as bisexual.
"He had to each lunch in the bathroom. He was just miserable," said Jessup.
The flyer on the family home shows a young man in his cap and gown anticipating graduation.
His parents told KTVU Ryan left with only the clothes on his back and his cell phone, but that his phone was recovered nearby.
"This is out of character for my son to do something like this," said Rossana Menjivar. "I worry. I don't know his state of mind. I don't know what he's going through."
Other teens told KTVU they too were bullied and that students use texting and social media to torment others.
"The schools don't have much power in getting them in trouble for bullying you," said Alexis Lozow, a friend and classmate of Ryan's at Alhambra High School. "Even if you have proof, a lot of times, they can't do much about it."
Family and friends said if only Ryan could see the large turnout at the vigil, he would know he is loved and has support.
