PITTSBURG, Calif. —

Water service has been restored to dozens of homes in a hilly Pittsburg neighborhood where a water main burst Tuesday.

The 8-inch pipe broke around noon near the intersection of Hillview Dr and Zion Ave, leaving 20 to 30 homes without water, said Walter Pease, the city of Pittsburg's director of water utilities.

Crews were able to patch up the pipe and restore service by around 3 p.m., Pease said.

The water main was estimated to be about 50 to 60 years old. Most water pipes have a life span of around 75 years, he said.

There was no construction happening in the neighborhood and it was not clear that afternoon what caused the pipe to burst, Pease said.

City crews remained at the scene as of 3:30 p.m. making street repairs.
