Man Accused Of Shooting Fremont Officer Brought To Oakland

A suspected gang member accused of shooting a Fremont police officer who tried to arrest him in Oakland last week was brought from San Diego County to Oakland Thursday, Alameda County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

Andrew Barrientos, 20, is charged with 10 felonies, including attempted murder and carjacking, and could face life in prison if he's convicted, Alameda County district attorney spokeswoman Teresa Drenick said.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court on Tuesday, she said.

Barrientos, who is being housed at the Glenn Dyer Jail in Oakland, is accused of shooting Fremont police Officer Todd Young, 39, when Young and fellow Officer Eric Tang attempted to arrest him at 2009 Auseon Ave., near Bancroft Avenue, in East Oakland at about 2:30 p.m. last Friday.

The two officers were working in Oakland as part of the Southern Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force.

San Diego police officers arrested Barrientos Saturday near the California-Mexico border. He had been held in San Diego County until Thursday.

Police said Barrientos was in the passenger seat of a car driven by 23-year-old Gustavo Silva at the time of his arrest.

Silva is charged with being an accessory to attempted murder after the fact and transportation of marijuana. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 2 p.m. on Friday.

He appeared briefly in court Thursday to be arraigned on a separate but related case alleging that he violated the terms of his probation for prior felony convictions for performing a lewd act on a child and failing to register as a sex offender.

Officer Young suffered significant bladder and stomach injuries in the shooting and has had to undergo several surgeries at Highland Hospital in Oakland.

Fremont police spokesman Detective Bill Veteran said Young remains in serious but stable condition and is heavily sedated but improving daily.

Fremont Police Chief Craig Steckler and a Highland Hospital surgeon will discuss Young's condition at a news conference at the hospital on Friday. They will be joined by Fremont Mayor Robert Wasserman and Nicole Young, Todd Young's wife.

Also present will be Sara O'Brien from the American Red Cross because Young has required large quantities of transfused blood as a result of his injuries. The Red Cross is coordinating blood drives around the Bay Area.

In addition to being charged with murder and carjacking, Barrientos is charged with attempted carjacking, transporting marijuana and two counts each of shooting at an occupied vehicle, carrying a concealed firearm and carrying a loaded firearm in a city.

He also faces numerous enhancement clauses, including allegations he is a member of a gang and was involved in street terrorism.
