OAKLAND, Calif. —
Oakland's plans to redevelop an old army base are coming closer to a reality.
Roughly $400 million in city, state and federal money is planned to go toward redeveloping the 330-acre lot near the terminal at the Port of Oakland.
Almost 200 people Saturday packed the Christian Center in West Oakland to lobby for local jobs at the old Oakland army base.
The group of community organizers and Oakland residents demanded the city and developers close loopholes in a job policy for future workers.
Community members and the city negotiated with developers for a 50 percent local hire rate.
"The sticking point is what's the trigger to have to hire local," said Jane Brunner, Oakland city councilwoman. "Do they have to have 50 employees or can they go down to having 20 employees before they have to hire locally?"
Hazel Wesson, a community organizer, and others also want a permanent community representative involved in the project even after it opens years from now.
"I want someone to be at that table so when they're getting ready to make decisions, they're not just making them just based on the bottom line," Wesson said.
A city committee is slated to vote on a plan that also has to be approved by the city council before the end of the month to secure hundreds of millions of dollars in state funding.
