Oakland Student Attempts To Poison Teacher

OAKLAND, Calif. —

Imagine turning your back on your coffee cup for just a moment and having someone spike it with a dangerous chemical. That's what happened Wednesday morning in a classroom at Oakland International High School, school officials said.

Sources said a female student spiked her teacher's coffee cup with dry erase cleaning fluid and possibly bleach.

The teacher took a sip and immediately spit it out.

“There was a student who was suspended for an act that could be construed as assault or attempted assault,” said Oakland schools spokesman Troy Flint.

The incident occurred after the teacher got the student in trouble for having alcohol on campus, sources said.

“I don't think that they were considered a problem student,” Flint said.

The teacher was unharmed, Flint added.

The teacher declined to press charges.

Oakland schools police didn't learn about the incident until about 24 hours after the alleged poisoning.

Oakland school board member Noel Gallo said for too long the district has not properly dealt with students' criminal behavior.

“There's no excuse for negative behavior and this district cannot tolerate that,” Gallo said. “And so, appropriate action should take place.”

“Any action or move towards bodily harm of the instructors, or teachers, then we have to be very serious and take action. And that applies to our student body as well.

“I think there's a very real concern in some cases that necessarily putting a student in the criminal justice system is not necessarily the best solution in every situation,” Flint added.

The police are looking at possible criminal charges against the student.
