OAKLAND, Calif. —
Oikos Unversity will open to faculty and students for the first time since a gunman opened fire on campus and killed seven people.
Jongin Kim, school founder and president, indicated the doors of the school would reopen Monday. Nursing students however, will report to the Unitek College campus in Fremont.
Killed in the tragic and grisly shooting were Grace Kim, 23, of Fremont; Lydia Sim, 21, of Hayward; Sonam Choedon, 33, of El Cerrito; Doris Chibuko, 40, of San Leandro; Judith Seymore, 53, of San Jose; Bhutia Tshering, 38, of San Francisco and Katleen Ping, 24, of Oakland.
Kim declined to speak to KTVU because of his limited English, so a school dean spoke to KTVU by phone Sunday.
"Still, we do our best comforting the victim's and their families," said Namsoo Woo, a dean at Oikos University.
The school will have counselors on hand Monday for students who are returning to the school, Namsoo said.
Jerome Knott, a homeless shelter founder, offered the school his support to build a bigger flower memorial.
"They're really hurting right now," Knott said. "The school is struggling just to stay open, just to reopen." Online, the memorial is still up with condolence messages pouring in.
On-lookers drove by Sunday afternoon and paid their respects.
"The school can't stay closed," said Yaya, an Oakland resident. "They have students that want to finish what they started."
Students such as Dawinder Kaur, who survived the school attack, agreed.
"I got shot and they came and helped me and they knew where I was," Kaur said.
Kaur could barely speak at the time of the shooting about the gunman who police said was 43-year-old One L. Goh.
"It shouldn't be that a person invests themselves and can't get what they came for," Yaya said.
Despite the tragedy, the president plans to speak to the media late Tuesday morning when he said a majority of students plan to report to class.
Goh has been charged with seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, plus a special circumstance allegation of committing multiple murders that could make him eligible for the death penalty.
Goh did not enter a plea or make a statement during his first court appearance Wednesday.
He is due back in court on April 30 and is expected to enter a plea.
