SAN FRANCISCO —
The 2011 Pride weekend is expected to include just as many stages and events as last year.
Sunday's parade is similarly expected to have no shortage of floats and participants.
The nonprofit San Francisco Pride Celebration Committee's financial woes do not appear to have scared off supporters as feared, committee members say.
"I can't say enough how happy I am that (supporters) really have taken a stand with their involvement in Pride and come back," interim Executive Director Brendan Behan told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I'm just tremendously appreciative for their patience."
And the committee has begun to climb out of the red, reducing its debt from $225,000 to $77,000 since December and paying off about 20 community groups that complained they were shortchanged last year, committee members say.
Those groups, which worked beverage booths, only received about half the money from sales they had gotten in previous years because of a bookkeeping error.
The error led to the resignation of the Pride organization's executive director and the board president.
"We did have to scream a little loud ... but the message was received," said Victoria Long, interim co-president of the non-profit group, Pets Are Wonderful Support.
The group was among those that complained about being shortchanged from beverage sales. But it has returned to sell liquor at the event his year.
"They're going to produce a wonderful event this weekend," Long said. "Nobody is going to be the wiser."
The Celebration Committee has followed the advice of the city controller, who evaluated its finances, said former San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty.
Dufty said if the event draws big crowds this weekend, the committee's financial trouble could be a thing of the past.
"Please join me in praying for sun," he said. "If it's a warm sunny day, Pride will be in the black."
