BERKELEY, Calif. —
The victim of a fatal shooting in Berkeley Thursday night has been identified as 32-year-old Kenneth Warren, police said Friday.
The shooting was reported at about 6:50 p.m. Thursday in the 3000 block of Shattuck Avenue, near Emerson Street.
Police Lt. Dave Frankel said Warren, a Hercules resident, worked near the shooting site at Don's Headquarters barber shop at 3019 Shattuck Ave.
Warren was struck multiple times by the gunfire, Frankel said.
He said police don't have any information about suspects or a motive in the shooting except to say that they don't think it was a random incident.
The shooting was Berkeley's first homicide of the year.
Police said whoever sprayed the house with bullets targeted the victim, but the bullet holes only offer a glimpse into the violence that took the life of Kenneth Warren and the terror felt by those who survived the gunfire.
At least seven bullet holes were visible in the front door of the Berkeley home. The front window was also shattered. Inside, there were more bullet holes than could be counted easily.
Police put out at least 79 evidence markers. Neighbors said they heard the shooting happen.
"We heard 'pop pop pop pop pop!' And then I kind of stood there and thought 'No, this is firecrackers,'" said area resident Debbie Greene "It stopped. It was like a pause and then you heard a 'pop pop pop pop!' again."
Friends said the victim was headed to a friends apartment to watch a basketball game. His friend didn't want to go on camera, but told KTVU he and his girlfriend heard a knock on the door.
His girlfriend stopped to fix her hair before opening up the door. He believes that likely saved her life. Moments later, the gunshots began and the glass started flying. They hit the floor and crawled out the back door.
The victim was later found on the front porch. Friday morning, those who knew him remembered a man who always had a positive outlook on life.
"His motto was keep it moving," said friend Deminika Spears. "If things are bothering you, just keep it moving. Change your venue."
While police believe the victim was targeted, friends said they just couldn't understand why.
"They took somebody really special," said Shirley Arderbery. "He's a good person. They took a good human being away from here. [It was] uncalled for."
There have been several other homicides in the vicinity of Emerson Street and Shattuck Avenue in recent years.
On Sept. 12, 2010, 35-year-old Adolfo Ignacio Celedon of Chile, who was walking with his girlfriend, was fatally shot at the corner of Emerson and Adeline streets. The case hasn't been solved.
On Oct. 6, 2008, Davon Faison, who was 15 at the time, fatally shot his father, 40-year-old Charles Faison, at the family's residence at 2022 Emerson St., which is between Shattuck Avenue and Adeline Street.
Davon was convicted of murder in juvenile court and will be held at a juvenile facility until he turns 25.
On Oct. 10, 2007, police found 9-year-old Amir Hassan dead at an apartment at 3011 Shattuck Ave., near Emerson Street, and said he may have been dead for at least 36 hours.
The boy's mother, Misti Hassan, later pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 11 years in state prison.
