Richmond Soccer Coach Arrested For Sexual Assault

MARIN CO —

A bay area soccer coach has been arrested Friday in the North Bay on charges that he sexually assaulted a 14-year old girl. Investigators say that 22-year old, Ivan Chavez lured the teen on the internet by promising her a modeling contract and authorities say there could be more victims.

The 22-year-old suspect was booked Friday at the Marin County Jail. He made bail and is expected in court to face some serious charges later this month.

The San Rafael police department says a 14 yr old San Rafael resident went on MySpace.com and started talking to another young girl who told her she was modeling and suggested she could put her in touch with her agent if she wanted to model too.

San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rohrabacher says the teenage girl gave out her cell phone number. A few days later police say the young victim was called by Chavez, who agreed to pick her up at Circuit City in San Rafael.

"He picked her up and drove her to a house in Richmond to sign some papers for the modeling contract and once he got her there he raped her. He brought her back to the Circuit City and dropped her off."

Police located Chavez last month after the victim spotted him in San Rafael.

"She actually saw him here in town last month and found out he was an acquaintance of someone she knew, we were able to identify him, interviewed him on Monday afternoon and arrested him on Monday night

Chavez has been the girls soccer coach at Richmond's De Anza High School for the past two seasons. Police say Chavez also coached two Girls soccer teams in contra Costa County.

The West Contra Costa Unified School District faxed a release to KTVU today stating the district will not re-new the coach's employment contract. Graphic

The release also said "the district employed Chavez in November 2004 on a yearly contract basis after receiving fingerprint check clearance from the U.S. Department of Justice."

The San Rafael Police Department is investigating whether there are any more alleged victims

De Anza High School says it notified the families of students who played for Chavez during the past two seasons after learning of the arrest this afternoon.

Police say Chavez was taken to the Marin County Jail where he was booked on rape and sodomy charges. The 22-year-old Chavez posted a 100-thousand dollar bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on august 16th at the Marin Civic Center
