San Francisco Police Investigating Fatal Hit-And-Run

SAN FRANCISCO —

Police are investigating a deadly hit-and-run accident in which a sports utility vehicle struck a man walking in a marked pedestrian crosswalk Friday night.

A pedestrian, identified as city resident Gerardo Yambao, 56, was struck by a hit-and-run driver at Lake Merced and Brotherhood Way around 7:40 p.m., according to the San Francisco medical examiner's office.

The incident happened just before 8 p.m. near the busy intersection of Lake Merced Boulevard and Brotherhood Way.

Police say a white SUV speeding along Lake Merced struck and killed the pedestrian, then sped off.

Pieces from the front end of the SUV were scattered across the road.

"From what we can gather, he was driving in excess of the speed limit," said police lieutenant Michael Caplan.

According to San Francisco Police statistics the area near the intersection averages several pedestrian accidents each year. Residents at nearby Parkmerced cite pedestrian safety as a top priority.

Authorities are searching for a white sport utility vehicle in connection with the crash, police said.
